Derek is a NRA Certified Instructor, Chief Range Safety Officer and Utah Concealed Firearm Permit Instructor. Derek volunteers his time with the Boy Scouts conducting Rifle and Shotgun Merit Badges and serving on the Shooting Sports Committee of the Trapper Trails Council. Derek also volunteers as a Range Safety Officer for the Wahsatch Shooter’s Association at the Davis County Gun Range and is a CERT member in his local community.
Derek is a veteran of the US Army having served as a Medic during Desert Shield/Desert Storm and also as a Military Policeman in Panama and other locations. 
Derek has worked as a Detention Officer, Reserve Police Officer, Sworn Police Officer and Federal Investigator. Derek enjoys hunting, camping, atv-ing, traveling the world, taking firearm training courses and especially helping others enjoy shooting sports.
Derek’s NRA certifications include, Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, Chief Range Safety Officer, Home Firearm Safety, Personal Protection Inside the Home, Personal Protection Outside the Home and Refuse to be a Victim.
